1960, Film: “Le Capitan”

The French-Italian cloak and dagger film "Le Capitan" (English title: "Captain Blood") premieres on 5 October 1960 in France. Directed by André Hunebelle and starring Jean Marais, Bourvil, Elsa Martinelli and Lise Delamare, the film is based on the novel "Le Capitan" (1907) by Michel Zevaco.

Synopsis
France 1616, King Louis XIII (Christian Fourcade) is only 15 and the power-hungry regent Concino Concini (Arnoldo Foà) is trying to take the seat of government right out from underneath him. The king turns to François de Capestang (Jean Marais), a noble swordsman to help him. François gets shot by Concini but he is ultimately saved by Gisèle d'Angoulême (Elsa Martinelli)...

  • Michel Zevaco's novel was also used in the 1946 film "Le Capitan" by director Robert Vernay starring Pierre Renoir, Jean Tissier, Lise Delamare and Sophie Desmarets.
  • The English title "Captain Blood" was also used for the 1935 film by Michael Curtiz featuring Errol Flynn as Peter Blood.

1966, Film: “Le Saint prend l'affût”

The French-Italian film "Le Saint prend l'affût" (English: "The Saint Lies in Wait") is released 26 October 1966 in France. The film directed by Christian-Jaque and written by Jean Ferry is based on the character created by Leslie Charteris. Main stars are Jean Marais as Simon Templar alias “Le Saint”, Jess Hahn as Hoppy Uniatz and Danièle Evenou as Sophie Chartier.

Synopsis
Oscar Chartier (Henri Virlojeux) plays a dangerous double game by selling secret plans to the German and American secret services, to ensure a comfortable future for his daughter, Sophie (Danièle Evenou). But the plans are fake and Chartier decides to get help from his good friend Simon Templar (Jean Marais)...

1963, Film: “L'honorable Stanislas, agent secret”

The 4the September, 1963, the French-Italian film “L'honorable Stanislas, agent secret” premieres in France. The film, directed by Jean-Charles Dudrumet, stars Jean Marais, Geneviève Page, Maurice Teynac, Jean Galland and Gaia Germani. In the UK the film was released under the title "How to Be a Spy Without Even Trying" and in the USA as "The Reluctant Spy".

Synopsis
One day leaving his flat Stanislas Dubois (Jean Marais), the manager of an advertising agency, meets Ursula Keller (Geneviève Page) delivering a painting by Cézanne to one of his neighbours. Ursula invites Stanislas to dinner but, in the restaurant, he mistakingly takes the coat of another man, the British spy Martin (Fred Fisher). When Martin is poisoned Stanislas is arrested...

1964, Film: Fantômas

On November 4, 1964, Fantômas premiered in France. Directed by André Hunebelle, this French film is loosely based on the fictional character created by French writers Marcel Allain (1885–1969) and Pierre Souvestre (1874–1914). Starring Jean Marais in a double role as the master villain Fantômas and journalist Jérome Fandor, Louis de Funès as commissaire Paul Juve and Mylène Demongeot as Hélène Gurn the girlfriend of Jérôme Fandor.

Synopsis
Fantômas, a man of many disguises, can impersonate anyone using very realistic masks. In this first of three films he is unhappy with journalist Fandor, because of a fictitious interview the journalist wrote about him...
