1963, Cars: Opel Rekord A

German car manufacturer Opel introduced the new Opel Rekord A in March 1963. The new car, a replacement for the Opel Rekord P2, was shorter but also wider than its predecessor. The car, inspired on the Chevrolet II, was designed at General Motors Technical Center in Michigan.

The Rekord A retained the engines of the P2, a 1488 cc L4 with 40 kW and a 1680 cc L4 unit with 44 kW or 49 kW (1700S version). In March 1964 a new six-cylinder in line engine with 2605 cc became available.
Predecessor: Opel Rekord P2

The Rekord A was available as a saloon/sedan with 2 or 4 doors, a "CarAVan" break with three doors and a coupé. A cabriolet version was produced by Autenreith and Karl Deutsch. The Rekord A was replaced in August 1965 by the Rekord B after a total production of 887488 cars.
