The British-Italian sf-series "Space: 1999" premiered on 4
September 1975 on the UK channel ITV. The series created by Gerry and
Sylvia Anderson ran for two seasons from 1975 to 1977. The main stars
were American actors Martin Landau as Commander John Koenig and
Barbara Bain as Dr. Helena Russell. Also in the cast were Barry Morse
as Professor Victor Bergman (season 1), Catherine Schell as the alien
Maya (season 2), Nick Tate as Alan Carter and Zienia Merton as Sandra
Benes.

"Space: 1999" was the last
production by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. The first series was
co-produced by ITC Entertainment and the Italian RAI, while the
second series was produced solely by ITC. The music was written by
Barry Gray (season one, 1975-1976) and Derek Wadsworth (season two,
1976-1977).

Synopsis
In the year 1999, nuclear waste stored
on the Moon's far side explodes, knocking the Moon out of orbit and
sending it, as well as the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, hurtling
uncontrollably into space…

- A third season of thirteen episodes was
planned, low sales of the series in America forced a last-minute
cancellation.
- Originally the series was conceived as
a new season of UFO (1970).
- Martin Landau and Barbara Bain were
married in real-life from 1957 to 1993. They had two children Susan
and Juliet.
