1970, Sport: UCI Road World Championships – Men's road race

The 1970 UCI Road World Championships for professional riders were held on 16 August 1970 in Leicester, England. It was the 37th edition of the event. 95 professionals took the start on Sunday 16 August for a race covering 271.96 kilometres. At the age of 21 in his first season as a professional, Jean-Pierre Monseré won at an average speed of 41.42 km/h.

Halfway through the race, Monseré was at the head of a seven-man breakaway that included four Italians: Felice Gimondi, Michele Dancelli, Gianni Motta and Giacinto Santambrogio. Eddy Merckx, the great favourite of the year, remained in the main field and, with 15 kilometres to go, was still a minute behind the breakaway. His attempt to bridge the gap came to nothing. At the finish, he was one of the first to congratulate his young compatriot on winning the title.

The crowd of around 10,000 warmly applauded the Englishman Les West, who finished fourth. Strong winds made the race exceptionally hard. At one point, the wind threatened to carry away the journalists’ tent, which had to be abandoned. The circuit included two moderate climbs, with both the start and finish at Mallory Park motor racing circuit.

1973, Sport: World Three-cushion Championship

From 15 to 18 February 1973, the 28th World Three-Cushion Championship was held in Cairo, Egypt. Raymond Ceulemans secured his eleventh consecutive World Championship title, a record that still stands today. Fittingly, he also raised the world record for the general average (GA) to 1.478. The gulf in class between Ceulemans and the rest of the field was striking: no other player managed to achieve a general average of 1.000 or higher.

1974, Sport: Criterium Aalst

On Monday, 22 July 1974, the 39th Aalst Criterium was won by Belgian cyclist Eddy Peelman, who sprinted to victory in a bunch finish. Peelman completed the 97-kilometre race in 2 hours and 12 minutes. Held on the day after the Tour de France, the Aalst Criterium is the oldest criterium in Belgium, having been organised annually since 1934.

Eddy Peelman

The race lost much of its appeal halfway through when Tour de France winner Eddy Merckx was forced to retire after suffering a mechanical failure to his gear mechanism. With no major breakaways succeeding, the race remained together until the finish and was ultimately decided in a bunch sprint. Peelman claimed victory ahead of Freddy Maertens, while the ever-surprising Wilfried Wezemael finished third, narrowly beating Roger De Vlaeminck to the line.

1960, Sport: Tour of Flanders

The 44th edition of the Tour of Flanders was held on 3 April 1960 over a distance of 227 km. The race started in Ghent and finished in Wetteren. The winner recorded an average speed of 38.690 km/h. Of the 164 riders who started, 72 completed the race.

Finish in Wetteren

As the defending champion from 1959, Rik Van Looy was the overwhelming favourite. He reached Wetteren in a leading group of around twenty riders. In the final sprint, however, Tuur Decabooter proved too fast for him after responding to a late attack by Jean Graczyk, and took the victory.
