1964, Cars: Ford Taunus 17M/20M (P5)

In 1964 Ford-Werke GmbH (Ford of Germany) introduced the new Ford Taunus 17M / 20M. It was the fifth newly designed German Ford to be launched after the war for this reason it is known as Ford Project 5 (P5) or the Ford Taunus P5. It was the first time a new Taunus was not given a nickname by the press, unlike its predecessor the “Badewanne” (Bath tub) or Ford Taunus P3.

The new car was at first available as a two or four door saloon, in 1965 the "Turnier" (station wagon) version and a coupé followed. The Ford Taunus P5 was also coach built by Karl Deutsch as a two-door cabriolet.
Predecessor: Ford Taunus 17M P3 (1960 - 1964)
Ford Taunus 17M/20M P5 (two and four door saloon)
Ford Taunus 17M/20M P5 Coupé
Ford Taunus 17M/20M P5 Turnier
The 17M was available with two engine choices, a 1498 cc V4 (44 kW) engine from the Taunus P4 or a newly designed 1699 cc V4 (51 kW) engine. The 20M had a 1998 cc V6 (63 kW) engine. The 20M TS had the same engine with a higher compression rate, it developed 66 kW. The P5 came with “Startautomatik”, an automatic choke originally introduced in P3, but in 1964 still a novelty in this class of car.
