1975, Belgian Comics Pats - Flappy van Flappinus

In 1975, the first story, Flappy van Flappinus, was published in the Pats series. The main characters are Pats, his headstrong younger sister Trezebees, and the extraterrestrial creature Flappy. The earliest stories were illustrated by Willy Vandersteen, while later albums were drawn by Robert Merhottein (Merho).

Synopsis
As Pats and little Trezebees are going to bed, a mysterious golden spacecraft circles the Earth. Caught in a violent thunderstorm, the craft is forced to make an emergency landing in the family’s garden, right among their father’s sunflowers. In the wreckage, Pats discovers an injured, talking creature named Flappy, who comes from the planet Flappinus...

The character Pats was originally created by Karel Weyler for his Pats puppet theatre. During these performances, Weyler also featured Suske, Wiske, Sidonia, Lambik and Jerom—characters created by Willy Vandersteen. In return, Vandersteen occasionally included Pats in his own stories. Pats is mentioned, for example, in De Vrolijke Bengels (Ons Volkske, 1950) and in the Suske en Wiske albums De Mottenvanger (1948), De Circusbaron (1953), Het Hondenparadijs (1961), De Wilde Weldoener (1961), and De Poppenpakker (1973).

In 1962, Pats was also used as the name of a newspaper supplement for De Standaard/Het Nieuwsblad. The title strip, published from 1962 to 1967, was illustrated by Edward De Rop on behalf of Willy Vandersteen for Studio Vandersteen. In 1974, the supplement was revived under the new name Patskrant, and Vandersteen created a new Pats comic series.

Weyler viewed the success of this new series with dismay, and a dispute arose between him and Vandersteen. To avoid legal proceedings, the series was abruptly discontinued on 23 August 1977. It was subsequently renamed Tits, and the newspaper supplement became Stipkrant. The character Pats was removed entirely.

1969, Belgian Comics: "Suske en Wiske", "De briesende bruid"

In 1969 the new "Suske en Wiske" (UK: "Bob & Bobette" or "Spike and Suzy", US: "Willy and Wanda") album "De briesende bruid" ("The roaring bride") is published. The series “Suske en Wiske” was created by Willy Vandersteen in 1945.

The story was pre-published in the newspapers "De Standaard" and "Het Nieuwsblad" from 9 September 1968 to 17 January 1969. The main characters are Suske (Spike), Wiske (Suzy), aunt Sidonia, Lambik (Ambrose), Jerom (Jethro), Professor Barabas, Fred van Telramund, King Henderik, the Swan Knight (Lohengrin), Bluebeard, Anna and her two brothers, Diana and her father vader, Sheik El Rui-Genteen, Sheik El Plé-Buij, Bagdada (horse), Anthony Fokker, Snobiënski, Fé Holksong and Willy Vandersteen.

Synopsis
When Sidonia receives a phone call from the angel Amor, a world full of love opens up for her. She travels through time to meet knights, sheikhs, noblemen and soldiers in the hope that she can marry one of them. But eventually she falls in love with the singer Fé Holksong. Will it come to a marriage or will someone put a stop to it?

Trivia

  • Amor, which Sidonia calls, is the Greek god of love.
  • The story of the Knight of the Swan, or Swan Knight, is a medieval tale about a mysterious rescuer who comes in a swan-drawn boat to defend a damsel, his only condition being that he must never be asked his name.
  • Bluebeard is a French folktale, the most famous surviving version of which was written by Charles Perrault.
  • Sheik El Plé-Buij is a caricature of Rudolph Valentino in the film The Sheik. His name is a pun on playboy.
  • The horse Baghdada is a pun on the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
  • The Dutch pilot Anthony Fokker plays an important role in this story.
  • Willy Vandersteen has a cameo in the last four strips.
  • Antwerp Mayor Lode Craeybeckx has a cameo at Sidonia’s wedding. Craeybeckx served as mayor of Antwerp (Belgium) from 1947 until his death in 1976,

1966, Belgian Comics: “Suske en Wiske”, "De vliegende aap"

In 1966 the reissued "Suske en Wiske" (UK: "Bob & Bobette" or "Spike and Suzy", US: "Willy and Wanda") album "De vliegende aap" ("The flying monkey") was published. The series “Suske en Wiske” was created by Willy Vandersteen in 1945.

The story was pre-published in the newspaper "De Nieuwe Standaard" from 28 September 1946 until 12 February 1947. The main characters are Suske (Spike), Wiske (Suzy), aunt Sidonia, Lambik (Ambrose), Arthur, Putifar the donkey, Boumbala, Serpentos, Banana, and Kanga the snake. The locations for this story are Belgium, and Dongo (parody of Congo). The album was reedited in 1968 as No 87 in the coloured series.

Synopsis
When Lambik (Ambrose) is reading the newspaper he becomes suddenly very excited about a photograph of a strange creature at the top of a tree in the forests of Dongo. It's a photograph of his brother Arthur who knows the secret of flying...
