1964, Cars: Ford Taunus 17M/20M (P5)

In 1964 Ford-Werke GmbH (Ford of Germany) introduced the new Ford Taunus 17M / 20M. It was the fifth newly designed German Ford to be launched after the war for this reason it is known as Ford Project 5 (P5) or the Ford Taunus P5. It was the first time a new Taunus was not given a nickname by the press, unlike its predecessor the “Badewanne” (Bath tub) or Ford Taunus P3.

The new car was at first available as a two or four door saloon, in 1965 the "Turnier" (station wagon) version and a coupé followed. The Ford Taunus P5 was also coach built by Karl Deutsch as a two-door cabriolet.

The 17M was available with two engine choices, a 1498 cc V4 (44 kW) engine from the Taunus P4 or a newly designed 1699 cc V4 (51 kW) engine. The 20M had a 1998 cc V6 (63 kW) engine. The 20M TS had the same engine with a higher compression rate, it developed 66 kW. The P5 came with “Startautomatik”, an automatic choke originally introduced in P3, but in 1964 still a novelty in this class of car.

1967, Cars: Ford (Taunus) P7a

In July 1967 an all new German Ford (Taunus) 17M/20M (internal P7a) was introduced. The P7a inherited its wheelbase from the previous model (P5) but the new body was longer and wider. The engine was front-mounted and drove the rear wheels. The new car offered four engines: a 1498 cc V4 engine, a 1699 cc V4, a 1998 cc V6, and a V6 2293 cc unit.

The car was offered as a two and four-door saloon, a three and five door “Turnier” station wagon, a three-door “Turnier” panel van, and a 2-door coupé.

The P7a was produced only for one year from July 1967 until July 1968. During this period 155,780 P7a's rolled off the production line. European car buyers did not fall for its squared American looks. Ford Germany replaced it one year after its introduction with the much more European styled P7b.

1960, Cars: Ford Taunus (P3) 17 M

In 1960 Ford-Werke GmbH (Ford of Germany) introduced the new Ford Taunus 17 M. It was the third newly designed German Ford to be launched after the war and for this reason it was from inception known within the company as Ford Project 3 (P3) or the Ford Taunus P3. The new car was nicknamed by the press as the “Badewanne” (Bath tub). Unlike the first post-war models with a North American design, the Taunus P3 was designed by German born Uwe Bahnsen.

The Taunus 17 M was available as a two-door, four-door saloon and a three-door “Turnier” station wagon. Coach built two-door cabriolets and coupé’s were offered by Karl Deutsch in Cologne, only about 150 were produced. There were three different engine sizes offered, being the 1498 cc, the 1698 cc and, from 1961, a new larger 1757 cc engine. Power outputs initially ranged from 55 PS (40 kW; 54 hp) to 60 PS (44 kW; 59 hp). All engines were petrol powered L4 water-cooled units.
