On 22 September
1970
the first TopPop episode was broadcast by the AVRO in the
Netherlands. The
program was
weekly
on
the air from
September 22, 1970 to June 27, 1988. The
first episode was presented by Ad
Visser, he
hosted the
series for fifteen
years. The
series was created
by Rien
van Wijk.

The
main goal
was to let artists act
their
latest hit record in the TopPop studio. Foreign
artists often performed on location or a promotional clip was used.
When
a promotional clip was not available the
hit was
played
to a dance routine by Penney de Jager and her dancing group.
Due
to the high quality TopPop-made
clips
were sometimes
chosen by
artists
as their promotional video. For
example
David Bowie with
"Rebel
Rebel".
