1961, Cars: Triumph TR4

In 1961 Standard-Triumph introduced the Triumph TR4. The new car was based on the chassis and drivetrain of the TR3 sports car, but with a modern body designed by Michelotti. An unique option was an hard top that consisted off a fixed glass rear window and a integral rollbar called “Surrey Top” (five years before the Porsche 911/912 Targa). The Standard inline-four engine from the TR2/3 was continued but the displacement was increased from 1991cc to 2138 cc.

In 1965, the TR4A with IRS or independent rear suspension superseded the TR4. In 1968 the TR4A's venerable four-cylinder engine was replaced by Triumph's 2.5-litre straight-6 and called the TR5 in the UK and Europe. In the US it was called the TR250.
