In 1966 Mary Quant receives the O.B.E.
(Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for her
services to the fashion industry. She went to receive this honour
from the Queen dressed in a mini-skirt.
Mary Quant is immortalised by the
fashion world as the originator of the mini skirt. The London
designer Mary Quant has an art-school background and has been
designing and manufacturing her own clothes since the late 1950s.
Convinced that fashion needs to be affordable and accessible to the
young, she opens - aged 21 - her own retail boutique, “Bazaar”,
on the Kings Road in 1955, introducing the 'mod' era and the 'Chelsea
Look.'
