1960, Belgian Comics: "Suske en Wiske", "De Windmakers"

In 1960 the new "Suske en Wiske" (UK: "Bob & Bobette" or "Spike and Suzy", US: "Willy and Wanda") album "De Windmakers" ("The Windmakers") is published. The series “Suske en Wiske” was created by Willy Vandersteen in 1945.

The story was pre-published in the newspapers "De Standaard" and "Het Nieuwsblad" from 22 August 1959 to 31 December 1959. The main characters are Suske (Spike), Wiske (Suzy), aunt Sidonia, Lambik (Ambrose), Jerom (Jethro), Theofiel Boemerang, Celestien, Miako, India, Jank, Kaviarski, Stan and Ston.

Synopsis
After the adventure in Texas, Theofiel Boemerang and Celestien come to live next door to Aunt Sidonia. Lambik receives a letter from the V.D.V., but the light is turned off and the letter is gone. Aunt Sidonia asks Lambik to take care of her garden and discovers that Theophiel's chickens eat the grain from her garden…

  • When Jerom (Jethro) hears that Christopher Columbus discovered America, he says: "Always thought that it was Marnix Gijsen", a reference to Gijsen's book "Discover America" (1927), as well as Gijsens' radio program “De Stem uit Amerika”.
  • The French boy in the album is a caricature of Charles de Gaulle.
