1973, Cars: Volkswagen Brasilia

In May 1973 Volkswagen do Brasil introduced the Volkswagen Brasilia as a successor for the ageing Beetle (Fusca in Brazil). The new car, designed by Marcio Piancastelli, was available in a three-door and five-door hatchback body style. The Volkswagen Brasília used as standard the 1600 cc air-cooled engine of the Volkswagen Beetle, the chassis of the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia and the styling of the Volkswagen 412. Volkswagen also offered a 1300 cc ethanol-powered engine option.

Total production (1973-1982) reached over one million cars including exports to Chile, Portugal, Bolivia, Perú, Ecuador, Venezuela, Paraguay, Mexico, Spain, Uruguay, and the Philippines. From March 1976 knock down kits were exported to Nigeria where the car was called Volkswagen Igala. The Brasília was also assembled in Mexico from 1974 to 1982. In 1978 the Brasilia was face lifted with new tail lights, and bumpers.
