1969, News / Music: Last public performance by The Beatles

The Beatles, joined by guest keyboardist Billy Preston, gave their final public performance on the rooftop of the London building that housed the headquarters of their record company, Apple Corps. The concert lasted 42 minutes and was filmed for their 1970 film "Let It Be". Following complaints from people in nearby buildings, the London police arrived but allowed John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr to perform one final song. The group closed with the same song that had opened the concert – "Get Back" – ending with the line: "Get back to where you once belonged." The final words came from John Lennon: "I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves. I hope we passed the audition."
