The main characters in the series are the brother and sister, Dag and Heidi. After the death of their father, they are left as orphans. Dag promises his father that he will always take good care of his younger sister, Heidi. Each of them wears half of a shell around their neck, symbolising the bond that keeps them connected at all times. Sven and Karin are Dag and Heidi’s adoptive parents, whom the children address as Uncle and Aunt. Their daughter, Inga, is initially somewhat jealous of Dag and Heidi, but she soon comes to regard them as her own brother and sister.

They go to see an old herbalist named Wanna, who treats his wound. She urges Werner to stay in her hut to rest and spend the night, but he refuses, insisting on returning home as quickly as possible. Despite Wanna’s warnings, he decides to take a shortcut past the White Castle. However, they are soon forced to turn back and take the usual route, as a strong wind is blowing in the area around the castle...
