On 15 October 1963 the Standard-Triumph division of Leyland Motors Limited introduced the Triumph 2000 Mk I at the London Motor Show. The 4-door saloon, used the six-cylinder engine derived from the Standard Vanguard. The modern body was designed by Giovanni Michelotti.

In 1965 the estate, partly built by Carbodies, was introduced. In October 1968 the 2.5 PI (petrol injection) was launched, fitted with a Lucas Automotive mechanical fuel injection system.

In 1969 the Mk I was succeeded by the Triumph 2000 / 2.5 PI Mk II also styled by Giovanni Michelotti. A total of 120,645 Triumph 2000 Mk I and 9,029 Triumph 2.5 PI Mk I were produced.
