In 1961, the album "La Guerre des 7 fontaines" was released in the comic book series "Johan et Pirlouit". The series was created by Peyo (Pierre Culliford) in 1952. The first story, "Le Châtiment de Basenhau" was published in the youth magazine Spirou on 11 September 1952. The first album was subsequently published by Dupuis in January 1954. While the first two albums were released under the title Johan, Peyo introduced the character Pirlouit in the third adventure, "Le Lutin du Bois aux Roches". The world-famous Smurfs also originated in a Johan and Pirlouit album, titled "La Flûte à six schtroumpfs".

The series is set during the Middle Ages in an unspecified European country. The main characters are Johan, the King's page, and his friend Pirlouit, a dwarf-sized man. Together, they encounter all kinds of mythical creatures, including wizards, witches, giants, and the Smurfs. Their adventures also take them to foreign lands, such as Scandinavia and North Africa.
