In 1975, the Dutch pop group Pussycat scored a number-one hit with ‘Mississippi’. Written by Werner Theunissen, the song reached number one in the charts in the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and West Germany.

Pussycat consisted of the three Veldpaus sisters: Toni (born 1953), Betty (1952–2024) and Marianne (born 1951). The other band members were guitarist Lou Willé, Theo Wetzels, Theo Coumans and John Theunissen. The group’s original name was 'Drie Zingende Zusjes' ('Three Singing Sisters'), but around 1970 it was changed to ‘Sweet Reaction’. In 1975, the name was changed to ‘Pussycat’ at the suggestion of producer Eddy Hilberts.

After ‘Mississippi’, the group went on to have several more hits, including ‘Georgie’ (1976), ‘Smile’ (1976) and ‘My Broken Souvenirs’ (1977).
